Responding to the Top 4 Questions I Get Asked About Standards-Based Grading (SBG)

I have been blessed to work with hundreds of schools and thousands of educators as they work to gain assessment literacy and refine their use of data-informed instruction. Often this support comes by unpacking Standards-Based Grading and helping teachers move their practices forward by eliminating 100-point scales, scripted curriculums, and arbitrary deadlines. But, this approach does not come without pushback.

In the video available below, I explain my answers to the 4 most popular questions I get asked by educators as they work towards embracing the many components of SBG.

  1. Does SBG reduce or eliminate teacher autonomy?
  2. Can SBG be used in a classroom with diverse learners, “at-risk” students, students with special needs, or learners who are below grade level?
  3. Are we just watering down our expectations by eliminating “behavior” and “personal responsibility” from student grades?
  4. Why do we even need this? Are you saying the system I grew up with wasn’t good enough?

Feel free to get my answers to each of these questions in the short, 8-minute video embedded below. I welcome your feedback, your responses, or your disagreements.
